Dart overcomes Tagger in Guangzhou
I watched Harriet Dart overcome Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to claim her first WTA singles title at the Guangzhou Open. The 30-year-old British number five from Hampstead, currently ranked 115th, used resilience to defeat the 18-year-old Austrian teenager. Tagger had beaten seven-time major champion Venus Williams. Dart, who entered the tournament as a qualifier, had saved three match points in her semi-final against Sun Xinran to reach this stage. I found her mental strength evident when she recovered from losing a lead twice in the decider to seal the biggest match of her career.
Dart dropped serve in the opening game and saved a break point in her next service game before she finally broke the fourth seed for 5-3 in the second set. In the deciding set, a run of five consecutive breaks of serve ended when Dart saved two break points to hold for 5-3. Tagger, the 53rd-ranked player, held two championship points in the ninth game of the decider, but Dart broke for 4-3 and held serve to move within one game of the title. After hitting a mid-court forehand into the net on her second championship point, Dart recovered to serve out the match with an unreturned serve, falling to the court in joy before celebrating with her team. I watched Dart take her third championship point with a service winner to seal her biggest career victory.
British resurgence and rankings
This victory moves Dart back into the world top 100, which secures her a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open in January. She has won 19 of 24 tour-level matches on hard courts since Wimbledon, bringing her season record to 23 wins from 34 matches. This is her highest winning percentage of her career. Her resurgence follows work with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli. After reaching a career high of 70th in 2024, Dart spent most of the past two seasons outside the top 100. She previously reached the third round at Wimbledon and the second round at the US Open.

Tagger told Dart, "It wasn’t fun to be on the other side of the court today – you’ve had an amazing year." I noticed Dart’s ability to win after losing the first set was a pattern, as this was her fourth such win in seven matches. The title rewards a second half of the season where she has struck the ball consistently well. Dart previously made the Wimbledon third round and US Open second round during her climb to rank 70. I see her return to the top 100 following her 23 wins from 34 matches this season.
