Alice Huang identified as intelligence asset
US intelligence agencies believe the Nvidia chief executive, Jensen Huang, is the target of a Chinese spy who had done business with him. Alice Huang, also known as Huang Le, is an executive at a Singapore-based datacenter company called Megaspeed and has no relation to the Nvidia CEO. American officials surveilled and monitored Huang because they suspected she smuggled advanced Nvidia chips to China. The New York Times reported that these officials determined she was acting as a Chinese intelligence asset and that she passed commercial information to Beijing, according to unnamed sources in the New York Times reporting on the matter.
The relationship with Jensen Huang
The Trump administration has imposed restrictions on exports of advanced AI chips to China as a matter of national security, but the US government suspects Megaspeed’s Huang of helping them get around those restrictions. Because Alice Huang developed a close relationship with the Nvidia CEO, White House officials are reportedly alarmed by her access to him. In his capacity as a leader in the AI boom, Jensen Huang has developed a close partnership with Donald Trump as the US government attempts to defend its position as a leader in AI development. American officials determined that Alice Huang developed a close relationship with the CEO during the course of their surveillance of the Megaspeed executive. The White House is reportedly alarmed by Alice Huang’s access to the head of Nvidia precisely because of the close relationship he developed with Trump.
Nvidia response to intelligence claims
Nvidia’s powerful chips are a cornerstone of the AI boom, and this status has vaulted Jensen Huang into one of the most influential leadership positions in the industry. Nvidia said there was nothing out of the ordinary about the interactions between the CEO and Alice Huang. A spokesperson for the company said, "Meetings with customers are part of a CEO’s job; Jensen talks with thousands of customer executives every year." Megaspeed and its customers "receive ordinary business information – not sensitive Nvidia trade secrets – and zero information relevant to national security". Nvidia maintains that these interactions were routine. The intelligence report that a suspected smuggler gained close proximity to a prominent leader in the AI industry is a serious security failure.
