Nuno exits after relegation and poor form

West Ham United expects to appoint Scott Parker as head coach after sacking Nuno Espirito Santo. The club sits eighth in the Championship, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough, after a disappointing start to the season. Nuno oversaw the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season when they finished just two points behind Tottenham Hotspur. He also struggled to implement his ideas after taking over from Graham Potter in September 2025. I find his poor tactics and confusing team selections to be the primary reasons for this failure. Nuno had 33 games to save West Ham from relegation, but his inability to turn the club’s fortunes around led to his departure. His last victory came at Swansea City. Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa also left the club. Mark Noble, Steve Potts, and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge of the side for the Wednesday night trip to Cardiff City.

The club board of directors decided that a change remains necessary to ensure that the club’s objectives and expectations remain on track after a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season. The Hammers have won only two of their last six games and suffered consecutive home losses to Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. These defeats, which ended a second-place position, saw the team drop from the top of the table. They also drew matches against Millwall and QPR. I think the team lacks the intensity and urgency required for this level, as they have conceded the opening goal in four of their last six matches. Some supporters welcomed Nuno because of the stability he offered and his experience guiding Wolves out of the Championship, but his failure to secure Premier League survival ended that support.

A revolving door at the London Stadium

This dismissal marks the fourth time West Ham has sought a permanent manager since David Moyes left in May 2024. Julen Lopetegui lost his job after six months with only six wins in 20 Premier League matches. Graham Potter followed him but also faced the sack after eight months when the club sat 19th. These constant changes follow massive financial losses of more than £104m that forced the sale of several players. The departures of Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, El Hadji Malick Diouf, James Ward-Prowse, and Freddie Potts secured the club about £150m in transfer revenue after relegation. The club used the transfer money to offset the losses from their fall to the second tier. They spent £22m on midfielder Arne Engels and £12m on winger Edvin Austbo. Experienced players Joel Veltman and Manor Solomon joined the club on free transfers. Tomas Soucek missed the first two months of this season because of an ankle injury. In the first half of September, the team scored 16 goals in four successive wins and went top of the table, including a 6-0 win over Wrexham.

Parker could fix the squad

West Ham sits in advanced talks with 52-year-old Scott Parker, who could be confirmed before the match against Cardiff City. Parker has experience leading both Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion from the Championship. He has been out of work since Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League in May. His former teammate Mark Noble will likely join his backroom staff. I believe the squad contains enough talent to facilitate an immediate return to the top flight. The team has shown flashes of quality, such as a 6-0 win against nine-man Lincoln City. However, recent home losses to Southampton and West Bromwich Albion show the inconsistency. Arne Engels has recorded three assists and zero goals in 12 games, while Edvin Austbo has scored twice in just two league starts. Jarrod Bowen and Konstantinos Mavropanos remain with the squad to support this transition. Parker’s history with Fulham and his promotion success with Burnley and Bournemouth make him capable of stabilizing this squad. The expectation at London Stadium is for an immediate return to the Premier League, making the next appointment a high-pressure role.
