Federal agents seize images from storage units
US federal agents arrested Thomas Wayne Markle, 82, near Tampa, Florida, on a federal criminal complaint for possession of child pornography. Prosecutors allege Markle kept child sexual abuse material, including sexually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, in two storage units near Los Angeles. Following the investigation of the storage units, which Markle had rented for nearly 20 years starting in 2008, the FBI seized approximately 78 items including slides, film negatives, and books. One image in the collection depicts an adult man, whom a witness identified as Markle, with a nude prepubescent girl. A third image shows a nude prepubescent girl in a room that appears to be part of a motel chain in the Philippines. Markle, a retired television lighting and photography director, faces one count of possession of child pornography and expects to appear in court in Tampa this Friday. The FBI and federal prosecutors in Tampa did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the case.
Family allegations and London police reports
Thomas Markle Jr., the 60-year-old half-brother of the Duchess of Sussex, was named a person of interest after claiming to have discovered a stash of images belonging to his father at their former home in the Philippines. Markle Jr. told the Sun on October 23 that he found child sexual abuse videos at the residence, which prompted him to contact the FBI in July. The Metropolitan Police in London confirmed they received a letter in 2019 containing troubling allegations against Markle, but the department stated they were only undertaking internal enquiries to confirm if an officer had passed the letter to the Duchess. The Duchess stated she was "deeply distressed" by the news of the images and explained that her decision to distance herself from her father in 2018 was to protect her children. Meghan claimed that in 2018, London police received a letter containing "troubling allegations" about her father and subsequently shared it with her. She noted that she was given assurances that authorities were investigating the matter. Markle denied the allegations, calling them "a bunch of lies" and stating, "I could never do what I’m being accused of." While he admitted to paying for sex during past visits to the Philippines, he denied any sexual contact with minors or possession of such material. Markle Jr. told the Sun that he had initially taken his father’s side during their long estrangement and apologized to Meghan for protecting the wrong person.
Ongoing investigations in the Philippines
Philippine authorities confirmed they are investigating the allegations through a task force dedicated to human trafficking and child sexual abuse. Philippine Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla announced he will conduct a forensic examination of the computer belonging to Thomas Markle. The FBI stated last month that it is aware of the allegations and will provide support to Philippine authorities while investigating any federal violations of US law. This development follows years of estrangement between Meghan and her father, who did not attend her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018. The Duchess was escorted by King Charles during her wedding because her father failed to walk her down the aisle, leaving the King to perform the role instead. Meghan previously sent a letter to her father while he was in a hospital in the Philippines receiving treatment for a blood clot that required an amputation of his left lower leg. "Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children," Meghan said. She said her choice to not allow him to have contact with her children was for the sole reason of protecting them.
